The Story
John Montaque was his name
and building bridges was his game.
The bridge he built, now still stands.
The second oldest bridge in the land.
It was built to perform a path
Through the HOTTENTOTS - Holland pass
From high in the Helderberg the river flows
and past our Tavern door, on it goes.
The Tweede river it was first named.
Out it's plain to see the name has changed.

Long ago "twas a cold and wintery night.
a fellah named Lourens, he did take a fright.
Falling into the river he drowned,
and in his death became renowned"
As the "Lourens River" it is known,
and on it's banks The Tavern has grown
We wish to host you one and all,
But PLEASE, in the river, do not fall!
We thank you for your patronage
